action

Nora Schwarz is sitting in front of the office of the production manager of a pump factory and wants to be admitted to an interview, but the latter refuses. But the secretary gives her her immediate dismissal because of a gross violation of company work instructions. As a qualified engineer , she helped develop a pump for a derrick that does not meet the requirements in practice. At her request, she is given a period of five days to find out the error on site, which she exceeds significantly and without the permission of her management, but with reference to the importance of her commitment. In the end, Nora fulfilled the task she had set herself, but in addition to the termination, she also received an offer from another company. She does not receive any support from her fiancé, who is also her boss and with whom she lives together, so she packs her bags and drives to her parents in order to bridge the time until the meeting of the conflict committee that she has requested. During the train journey there, she looks back at the development of this story.

Nora's discussion with her fiancé Jürgen has been going on for a long time. He is of the opinion that it is not necessary to get to the bottom of the problems on site, because a trade fair award for the pump speaks for itself and if the customer cannot cope with it, he should better adhere to the operating instructions. Against Jürgen's will, Nora gets permission to drive to the derrick to find the cause of the frequent failures. At the train station in the wintry mountains, geologist Dr. Hans Likendeel was picked up in an off-road vehicle that got stuck in the snow, so they had to walk the rest of the way. In the caravan of the rig crew, the three other colleagues are talking about the renewed failure of a pump when they arrive. But first the caravan has to be redesigned for the female guest. Then Nora S. insists on seeing the defective pump parts immediately, realizes that it is due to the cuff and the piston, which the workers have already found out for themselves. Nora promises them to stay until she has found the cause.

After another pump failure, the drilling workers verbally attack the engineer personally, so that she drives home on the same day. In operation, she is told that it cannot be the pump, but that external influences are responsible for the damage. Nora is not convinced of this and drives again, this time without a permit, to the derrick. The approval is given to her later by phone by Jürgen, who also points out that she has already received a reprimand for her arbitrary behavior and that he has already gotten into trouble because of this.

Heavy snowfalls paralyze the traffic routes of the entire GDR , the workers at the derrick are also trapped in the masses of snow, so that they have to be supplied by helicopter. During such an action, Hans Likendeel tries to kiss Nora with force, but she furiously resists it. In the evening Nora dances with the three workers, only Hans stays lonely at the table. The telegrams from Nora's company are piling up asking her to come back immediately, which the calls from her fiancé confirm. Nora makes no headway with investigating the cause, is desperate and asks Likendeel to accompany her on a walk through the snowy forest. To comfort her, he gives her another kiss, but this time she returns. These walks pile up, they get closer. During this time, Nora also finds the fault in the pump and corrects it. Since Nora always has trouble with her business, Likendeel makes sure that she can start in his combine . But since she was not asked, Nora does not agree with the procedure at all,

During the visit to her parents, to whom she told her story after a few days, she found understanding listeners who strengthened her views and agreed to support her. The conversations with her school friend, who works as a kindergarten teacher, also give her new strength. Then the invitation to the meeting of the conflict commission comes, which is why she goes back to her company. To her surprise, the three workers from the derrick appeared to stand by her side. Only the geologist refuses to come to the meeting in writing because he's fed up with the damned women, as he puts it. The production manager accuses her of not wanting to fit in with the collective, although a half-year-old assessment says exactly the opposite. To the accusation of refusal to work, Nora replies that she rejects this accusation because the company wanted to prevent her from completing her work. The chairman of the commission then interrupts the meeting for 15 minutes and the outcome remains open.

Production and publication

The scenario came from Georg Schiemann and the dramaturgy was in the hands of Norbert Leverenz .

The first broadcast of the black and white film took place on the occasion of International Women's Day on March 8, 1981 in the first program of the television of the GDR .

criticism

In New Germany , Henryk Goldberg wrote that words, sentences and dialogues developed out of the picture with a certain casualness and that the camera photographed observing rather than participating. He further wrote:

“However, that also led to a certain tenacity now and then when the camera observed extensively and communicated what was already understood by the viewer. This is where the effort to give the film what the book withheld, to draw individual profile lines, not to leave out psychological issues entirely. One should not rightly accuse the film of the fact that this did not succeed, could not succeed. "
