Norbert Ballhaus (born December 15, 1955 in Gladbeck ) is a German local politician (formerly SPD ). He was the mayor of Moers from 2004 to 2014 .

Life

After graduating from high school in Dorsten , Ballhaus studied at RWTH Aachen University , where he earned a degree in engineering. From 1991 he was head of the mine surveying the West colliery in Kamp-Lintfort . Ballhaus is married for the second time and has five children.

politics

After joining the SPD in Essen on June 10, 1990, he moved to the local Rheinkamp club in Moers in 1991 . From 1999 to 2004 he was a representative of the SPD in the Wesel district council . In the local elections in autumn 2004, he ran for the office of mayor of Moers and became the successor of CDU politician Rafael Hofmann through his election victory . In the local elections on September 30, 2009, he prevailed against the CDU candidate Cay-Jürgen Schröder. In the 2014 local elections, none of the candidates received the required absolute majority in the first ballot. In the runoff election on June 15, Ballhaus lost 35.87 percent to the CDU candidate Christoph Fleischhauer , who received 64.13% of the vote. Ballhaus' term of office ended on June 23, 2014.

Failed voting procedure

The citizens' initiative "City Hall without Ballhaus" threw Norbert Ballhaus, among others, corruption and destruction of urban property before and therefore struggled in 2012 a referendum for dismissal of the mayor of. The 14,000 votes required for the referendum were not achieved.
