Norbert Bartsch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Norbert Bartsch (* 1955 ) is a German forest scientist .

Scientifically, he has emerged primarily as a specialist in the silvicultural treatment of the Rhine floodplain forests in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Life

Norbert Bartsch studied forest sciences from 1976 to 1981 at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . In his diploma thesis he dealt with the root sponge ( Heterobasidion annosum ). He then worked on his dissertation, Ecological Investigations on Root Development on Young Spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) And pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) plants , with which he received his doctorate in 1985 from Göttingen University . It was strongly influenced by the so-called " forest death " discussed at the time , on which particularly intensive research was carried out in the Research Center Forest Ecosystems in Göttingen .

From 1981 to 1996, Bartsch worked as a research assistant at the University's Institute for Silviculture , from 1996 as an academic councilor and later as an academic senior councilor in the department of silviculture and forest ecology in the temperate zones of today's Burckhardt Institute. As such, he is involved in research, teaching and administration.

In his scientific work, he is primarily concerned with beech forest ecosystems . He investigates how silvicultural interventions affect material turnover and tree regeneration and investigates the question of what contribution dead wood makes to the nutrient balance of these Central European ecosystems. His further specialty is the silvicultural treatment of the Rheinau forests on the Upper Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate. The main concern here is to preserve the English oak's place in this ecosystem. Since the mid-1980s, Bartsch has carried out regular on-site research on behalf of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Forestry Administration, often together with Professor Dr. Ernst Röhrig . They published their research results in several volumes, which appeared in the series of publications of the State Forest Administration of Rhineland-Palatinate and publications from the forestry faculty of the University of Göttingen and the Northwest German Forest Research Institute .

Bartsch is also known to students and forestry practitioners for his identification book Forest Grasses , which was first published in 1987.

Research stays took him to Argentina (1987 and 1992), Mexico (1985 and 1988), Canada (1986), Korea (1997) and the USA (1998).

Since 1992, Norbert Bartsch has been in charge of the forest science journal, Forstarchiv, as editor . He has written numerous articles for this and other national and international specialist bodies. He is also involved as editor-in-chief on the board of the “Science and Literature” association. He also represents the Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology on the editorial board of the Göttingen University Press .
