Burghard von Lüpke (* 1939 in Bremervörde ) is a German forestry practitioner and forest scientist . He was a professor of silviculture at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and is considered a specialist in the silvicultural treatment of the European larch .

Live and act

After graduating from high school in Celle , Burghard von Lüpke completed his forestry time in the Lower Saxony Forestry Offices Rosengarten and Langeloh . From 1960 he studied forest sciences, first until 1962 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and then until 1964 at the Georg August University in Göttingen in Hann. Münden , which also included a semester internship in South Africa . After the diploma exam in August 1964, the legal traineeship followed in the Lower Saxony state forest administration, which he completed in April 1968 with the Great Forest State Examination ( state examination ). However, in parallel to his practical training, von Lüpke continued to work in research. As a trainee lawyer, he wrote to Professor Dr. Ernst Röhrig wrote his doctoral thesis on the natural rejuvenation of the European larch in southern Lower Saxony , with which he received his doctorate in forest sciences in 1967 . This tree species has kept him busy since then.

After the state examination, Dr. von Lüpke briefly at the Bovenden Forestry Office , but from 1968 to 1973 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Silviculture of the Forestry Faculty of the University of Göttingen, where the faculty was in Hann. Münden was a resident. His scientific work was only interrupted by an expert report that took him to Guatemala for six months . In September 1973 he was transferred to the Lower Saxony forestry office in Reinhausen near Göttingen, which Burghard von Lüpke then headed from July 1974 to February 1991. From there he took on silvicultural teaching assignments at the University of Göttingen and the University of Applied Sciences Hildesheim-Holzminden and continued his scientific work in close contact with the institutes of the faculty. In 1982 he completed his habilitation with the thesis Attempts to introduce larch and oak into beech stands , received the venia legendi for the subject of silviculture and was appointed adjunct professor in 1987.

As the successor to his teacher Ernst Röhrig, who retired at the end of the summer semester 1987, he was appointed to the chair for silviculture in the temperate zones of the forest science department of the University of Göttingen on March 1, 1991. He retired in 2005.

Burghard von Lüpke's scientific focus is on the investigation of clearcutting- free silviculture methods and the natural regeneration of oak , beech and European larch. He also deals with quality criteria for forest plants and their success in transplanting, as well as the structure of primeval beech forests . The scientist publishes his research results in various forestry journals. In addition, he was involved in various working groups of the Lower Saxony State Forest Administration and in this context was also co-author of a number of silvicultural information sheets, for example on the care of pure and mixed beech stands or for the upbringing and care of hardwood stands . He is also one of the editors of the standard work on forestry on an ecological basis , founded by Alfred Dengler , which today is one of the most important textbooks for higher education in this field.

In addition, von Lüpke was chairman of the association "Wissenschaft und Schrifttum" eV, which primarily deals with the publication of the series "Writings from the Forestry Faculty of the University of Göttingen and the Lower Saxony Forest Research Institute", which is published by JD Sauerländer's Verlag in Frankfurt am Main .

Professor Dr. Burghard von Lüpke lives in Göttingen.
