The North American silk ( Cuscuta campestris ) is a plant of the genus silk ( Cuscuta ) in the family of wind plants (Convolvulaceae). This parasitic plant species is widespread in the New World .

Vegetative characteristics

North American silk is an annual herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 10 to 50 centimeters. It grows in dense, tangled mats. The stems are strikingly orange and smooth.

Generative characteristics

The flowers are in more or less dense clusters and some have short stalks. The crown is yellowish white. The narrow, triangular pointed scales are usually longer than the corolla tube and protrude from it. The scars are heady.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 56.

North American silk is a therophyte and holoparasite .

distribution

North American silk is widely used in North America, the Caribbean, and western South America. It is a neophyte in southern and central Europe . In Germany, too, it has been found regionally in clover and alfalfa fields in the Chenopodietea societies since 1898.
