Nordweil is a small village embedded in a valley in the municipality of Kenzingen in the district of Emmendingen .

location

Nordweil

The village lies on the edge of the foothills of the Black Forest . The place is bordered by vineyards in the south, east and west and opens towards the north to the bleach valley . In addition to the vineyards, the place has large areas of forest. There are some beautiful half-timbered houses in the village center. Nordweil can be reached from the Bundesstraße 3 from Kenzingen , either via the Bleichtal and Wagenstadt or via Bombach .

history

The village "Norwilo" was first mentioned in 1095, when it was donated to the Alpirsbach monastery as a property together with other goods by Count Ruodmann von Hausen , Adelbert von Zollern and Alwin von Sulz in a foundation . With the numerous turmoil of the 16th century, the peasant uprisings and finally the Reformation, Duke Ulrich von Württemberg occupied the monastery in Alpirsbach after the reconquest of his duchy and reformed it in 1534. In October 1684 ( Peace of Westphalia ), the Alpirsbach monastery became part of it Nordweil awarded to the Duke of Württemberg. This made Nordweil in the Breisgau region of Austria an enclave in Württemberg . However, it was also claimed by the Habsburg dynasty, creating a long-lasting conflict. The place remained in Württemberg until 1806 and then came into the possession of the Grand Duchy of Baden via the exchange and epuration agreement . The Meierhof and other residential and official houses, feed and manorial cellars , as well as two wine and oil presses fell to the Baden house, were auctioned and demolished. In 1971, Nordweil was incorporated into the Kenzingen community as part of the community reform.

Incident at the end of the war

French troops moved into Nordweil on April 20, 1945 with several half-track vehicles and stopped in the middle of the village at the linden tree. A group of Nordweiler villagers gathered to look at the foreign soldiers and the vehicles. When one of the French soldiers jumped out of the vehicle, he accidentally unlocked a hand grenade. He picked it up and shouted "Attention!", Realized that he was surrounded by civilians and therefore could not throw the grenade away, and turned back to the armored vehicle. The grenade exploded and the soldier died a little later of his injuries. Apart from a minimal injury to a child (in one of the reports), no civilians appear to have been harmed.

The story was told and described in various variants after the war in Nordweil, but there is no reference to the incident at the site of the accident and no further details are known about the self-sacrificing soldier.

church

Although Nordweil belonged to the Reformed Duchy of Württemberg for centuries, the Catholic faith remained. Nordweil was a subsidiary of the parish Bleichheim . Today it is part of the Kenzingen pastoral care unit . A chapel dedicated to St. Barbara is mentioned in 1456 and 1588 . In 1760 a new church with three baroque altars was built on the Kirchberg above the village.

Buildings

Today's Catholic Church is like its predecessor chapels of St. Dedicated to Barbara. The baroque church, built in 1760 , has an embedded sandstone cube on the choir wall, with the oldest date in the village, 1481. In 1878/79 the baroque roof turret was demolished and a slim facade tower was built. The nave was widened in the twenties. There are some beautiful half-timbered houses in the village, often with coats of arms and dates from the time when they belonged to Alpirsbach Abbey. You can also find very beautiful border and landmarks with Württemberg coats of arms and abbot coats of arms of the Alpirsbach monastery along the local border.

economy

Nordweil was characterized by agriculture in the past. In addition to the viticulture operated on the loess slopes , small-scale agriculture was practiced. In the first half of the 20th century, tobacco growing and a cigar factory flourished for a short time. Until after the war, the wine was made in own stumbling blocks . One of these tumblers was also equipped as an oil mill with a roller mill and pan mill . Here rape , camelina , beechnuts and walnut kernels were processed. The trott tree of the former Nordweiler oil mill stands today in front of the winegrowers' cooperative in Bickensohl in the Kaiserstuhl . From the 1970s, the small farms were given up more and more and the focus shifted to viticulture. For this purpose, the steep slopes were terraced with the Landig, Hungersberg, Hummelberg and Blosenberg vineyards until 1977 and a net vine area of 118 ha was gained. In 1977 the Nordweil winegrowers' cooperative joined the central winery , today Badischer Winzerkeller in Breisach, to market and develop the wine .
