Norman Brown (born December 18, 1970 in Shreveport , Louisiana ) is an American jazz guitarist who is particularly successful in the field of smooth jazz .

biography

Norman Brown grew up in Kansas City , Kansas . He started playing guitar when he was around eight years old and was mainly influenced by Jimi Hendrix and later by an idol of his father, Wes Montgomery . After high school , he went to Los Angeles to study at the Musicians Institute . He stayed at the institute for a few years and later taught there, at the same time he played in local clubs and was there due to his musical closeness to George Benson for the label MoJazz, a subsidiary of Motown Records, discovered and got a recording deal. In 1992 MoJazz released his debut album Just Between Us , followed by After The Storm in 1994 and Better Days Ahead in 1996 . After The Storm was the musician's first major hit, and Better Days Ahead won the 1997 American Jazz Award .

For the album Celebrations , Brown moved to Warner Bros. Records in 1999 , where he worked with producer Paul Brown for the first time. The album Just Chillin 'was also released here in 2002 , for which he received the Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album in 2003 , for which Kenny G , Boney James , John Tesh and saxophonist Kirk Whalum were also nominated. With the latter and the trumpeter Rick Braun he founded the jazz band Brown-Whalum-Braun (BWB) in 2002 and released the album Groovin ' . In 2004 West Coast Coolin 'was released as a follow-up album to his Grammy success, in which he also sang for the first time. A year later followed the compilation The Very Best of Norman Brown , which was one of the most successful smooth jazz albums of the year.

In 2007 Stay With Me followed , the album Sending My Love , which was released in 2010, was released on Peak Records . The last album to date, 24/7 , which he released together with Gerald Albright in 2012 , was released by Heads Up International, as was the second BWB album Human Nature .

Norman Brown should not be confused with the jazz guitarist of the same name, who was born in the late 1930s and later. a. played with Louis Armstrong and the Count Basie Orchestra .
