Norman Myers

Norman Myers CMG (born August 24, 1934 - October 20, 2019 in Oxford ) was a British conservationist and expert in the field of biodiversity . He was the father of the marathon runner Mara Yamauchi .

Life

Norman Myers was born in Clitheroe , Lancashire . He studied at Keble College , Oxford and graduated in 1958 with a BA in French and German. He then worked as a teacher and photographer in various African countries. In 1973 he obtained a Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley.

Myers was a professor at Green College of Oxford University and at the Saïd Business School and was a lecturer at Duke University . He has been a visiting professor at Harvard , Cornell , Stanford, and Berkeley . In 1994 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences .

He was the author of numerous books. Myers wrote on environmental issues such as overpopulation , poverty in developing countries, over-consumption, unsustainable agriculture, global warming and biological security . More recent publications deal with climate refugees , hunger and nutrition in Sub-Saharan Africa and "new consumers in developing and transition countries".

His books on the mass extinction of species in the Holocene and the deforestation of tropical rainforests have received attention . His scientific work also contributed to the creation of the concept of biodiversity hotspots . He also worked on political ecology .

He has been criticized by various social scientists for his views of neo-Malthusianism .
