description

Branches with needles

The characteristics of the genus Nothotsuga lie roughly between the hemlocks ( Tsuga ) and Keteleeria .

Vegetative characteristics

Nothotsuga longibracteata grows as an evergreen tree and reaches heights of growth of up to 30 meters and trunk diameters (DBH) of about 1 meter. The bark is dark brown. The 1 to 1.5 mm long stalked leaves have a flat, needle-shaped, 1.1 to 2 (rarely up to 2.4) centimeter long and 1 to 2 (rarely up to 2.5) millimeter wide leaf blade. The stomata are arranged in several lines on both sides of the leaf.

Generative characteristics

Nothotsuga longibracteata is single sexed ( monoecious ). The cones, which are purple to red at first and dark brown when ripe, stand upright and are about 2 to 5.8 centimeters long and about 1.2 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter. In the middle of the cone, the seed scales are broadly rhombic to almost circular with a length of 0.9 to 2.2 centimeters and a width of 1.2 to 2.5 centimeters. The cover scales are 0.7 to 1.8 centimeters in size. The triangular-egg-shaped seeds have a length of 4 to 8 millimeters and a width of 2.5 to 3 millimeters. The oval, elongated wings have a rounded tip. The cones need six to eight months from pollination to maturity, after which they either fall as a whole or the cone scales detach from the spindle and fall off individually. The pollen count takes place from March to April and the seeds ripen in October.

distribution

The homeland of Nothotsuga longibracteata is in China in the provinces of northeast Guizhou , southwest Hunan , northern Guangdong , northeast Guangxi and southern Fujian .

They form small pure stands or mixed into evergreen broad-leaved sclerophyllous forests (along with species of the genera castanopsis ( Castanopsis ), Lithocarpus and oak ( Quercus )) or mixed into forests with Fagus sinensis , Pinus Fenzeliana , Tetra Centron sinensis and other species. Their locations are on sunny mountain slopes on acidic soils in areas with cool, temperate, humid climates with frequent rainfall and fog. They occur at altitudes of (300) 400 to 1900 (2300) meters.

Since 1998, the IUCN has classified Nothotsuga longibracteata as an endangered species. The reason for this is the deforestation of the original distribution area.

Systematics

This species was named Tsuga longibracteata by Wan-Chun Cheng in Contr. Biol. Lab. Chin. Assoc. Advancem. Sci. , Sect. Bot., Volume 7 (1): Page 1 first published. This species differs from the Tsuga species in many features . In 1948 it was renamed in Travaux du Laboratorie Forestier de Toulouse , Volume 1 (4.24), pp. 24-28 in × Tsugoketeleeria longibracteata (WCCheng) Van Campo & Gaussen . In 1989 it was renamed Nothotsuga longibracteata (WCCheng) HHHu ex CNPage in Notes from the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh 45 (2), p. 390, this is the currently accepted name. Another synonym is Keteleeria longibracteata (WCCheng) de Laub. Hsen-Hsu Hu in Christopher Nigel Page : Notes from the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh Volume 45, 1989, page 390 is considered the first valid publication of the generic name Nothotsuga .
