The Catholic parish church of Notre-Dame-en-Saint-Melaine in Rennes , a French town in the Ille-et-Vilaine department in Brittany , was originally built in the 11th century. The former monastery church of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Melaine has been classified as a Monument historique since 1930 .

history

The church, originally consecrated to Saint Melanius, who was Bishop of Rennes in the 6th century , became the parish church after the abolition of the monastery during the Revolution in 1791. From 1803 to 1844 the church was a cathedral under the patronage of St. Peter (Saint-Pierre). In 1844 it was again parish church and consecrated to the Assumption of Mary .

architecture

The floor plan shows the shape of a Latin cross. The five- bay nave with side aisles, crossing and transept , the arms of which protrude only slightly, is followed by a four-bay choir with side aisles, which ends in an apse chapel with a flat choir head. The foundation walls of the transept arms and the tower date from before Romanesque times.

portal

The portal , a kind of narthex , is formed by three arches made of regular wedge stones that extend in a single line to the floor. Two freestanding columns have capitals with sculptural decoration.

The bell tower was renewed in 1432 and in 1676 the entire facade of the rectangular tower was redesigned in the style of the time. In 1855 the tower was raised by one storey and crowned with a Madonna figure.

In the Gothic style , parts of the nave were renewed. Further renovations took place in the 18th and 19th centuries.
