Novodneprit is a very rarely occurring mineral from the mineral class of "elements" with the chemical composition AuPb 3 and is therefore chemically an intermetallic compound of gold and lead in a molar ratio of 1: 3.

Novodneprit crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system , but has so far only been found in the form of microscopic inclusions up to about 7 µm in olivine .

Etymology and history

Novodneprit was first discovered in 2002 during the microscopic examination of gold concentrate from the limonite zone of the polymetallic gold-arsenic deposit near Novodneprovsk in the Aqmola area in Kazakhstan . The first description was published in 2006 by KS Dusembaeva, VL Levin, PE Kotel'nikov and GK Bekenova, who named the mineral after its type locality .

classification

In the outdated, but partly still in use 8th edition of the mineral classification according to Strunz , Novodneprit belonged to the mineral class of "elements (including natural alloys or intermetallic compounds, carbides, nitrides, phosphides and silicides)" and there to the department of "metals and intermetallics." Alloys (without semimetals) ”, where together with Anyuiit , Auricuprid , Bogdanovite , Gold , Hunchunit , Copper , Silver , Tetra-Auricuprid and Yuanjiangit the“ Copper Series ”with the system no. I / A.01 formed.

The 9th edition of Strunz's mineral systematics , which has been in effect since 2001 and is used by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA), also classifies the Novodneprit in the “Metals and Intermetallic Compounds” department. However, this is further subdivided according to the predominant metals in the compound, which have been divided into metal families according to their related properties. Novodneprit can be found here according to its composition in the subdivision "Copper Cupalit Family", where it only forms the unnamed group 1.AA.15 together with Anyuiit and Khatyrkit .

The systematics of minerals according to Dana , which is mainly used in the English-speaking world , assigns Novodneprit to the class and there in the department of the same name of "elements". Here he is together with Anyuiit and Hunchunit in the group " Anyuiit and related alloys " with the system no. 01.01.04 within the sub-section "Elements: Metallic elements other than the platinum group".

Crystal structure

Novodneprit crystallizes tetragonally in the space group I 4 2 m (space group no. 121) with the lattice parameters a  = 11.954  Å and c  = 5.89 Å as well as 8 formula units per unit cell . Template: room group / 121

Education and Locations

At its type locality Novodneprovsk in Kazakhstan, Novodneprit was found in spherical (spheroidal) gold aggregates , where it occupies the free spaces between the gold crystals in close association with anyuiit .

In addition to its type locality, only two other sites for Novodneprit are known to date (as of 2017). In France, the mineral could in a peridotite - outcrop at the Etang de moth (also Lhers , L'Hers or outdated Lherz , see also Lherzolite ) in the department of Ariege be discovered. In the Russian region of Eastern Siberia , more precisely in the Sakha Republic , it occurred in a platinum-gold deposit in the Inagli massif within the Aldan highlands .
