Nurlan Qapparow

Nurlan Schambyluly Qapparow ( Kazakh Нұрлан Жамбылұлы Қаппаров , Russian Нурлан Джамбулович Каппаров / Nurlan Dschambulowitsch Kapparow * 30th March 1970 in Alma-Ata , Kazakh SSR ; † 26. March 2015 in Beijing , People's Republic of China ) was a Kazakh businessman and politician.

Life

Nurlan Qapparow was born in Alma-Ata in 1970 . He studied at the Kazakh National University from 1989 to 1991 . In 1997 a further degree followed at the Technological Institute Almaty . In 2003 he graduated from Harvard Kennedy School with a Master of Public Administration.

He began his professional career as the founder and president of the Accept holding, which he headed between 1991 and 1997. The company comprised 40 companies operating in various sectors. In July 1997 he became President of the newly established state-owned company KazTransOil . After a few months at the helm of the company, he became president of the Kazakh oil company Kazakhoil in April 1998 . After having headed various companies in the mineral oil industry over the past few years, he held the post of Deputy Minister for Energy, Industry and Trade from October 1999 and from January to September 2000 the post of Deputy Minister for Energy and Natural Resources.

As a businessman and entrepreneur, Qapparow has served on the boards of numerous companies. From January to July 2000 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of KEGOC and from October 2003 to September 2005 a member of the Board of Directors of PetroKazakhstan. Between 2003 and 2007 he was also managing director of Kazinvestbank, which he owned together with Jerbolat Dossajew and Citigroup Venture Capital International Growth Partnership.

On January 20, 2012, he was appointed Minister for Environmental Protection in the cabinet of Kärim Mässimow . After a reorganization of the ministry, he was minister for environmental protection and water resources. Qapparow was a member of the Kazakh government until August 6, 2014. On August 7th, he was appointed CEO of Kazatomprom .

The Forbes magazine estimated his fortune last for around 150 million US dollars, which made him one of the richest people of Kazakhstan.

Qapparow died of a heart attack on March 26, 2015 while visiting Beijing .
