Peniocereus serpentinus is a species of plant in the genus Peniocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet serpentinus means 'serpentine'. Spanish common names are "Junco", "Junco Espinoso", "Pitahiyita" and "Reina de la Noche".

description

Peniocereus serpentinus grows shrubby and often forms thickets with numerous straddling to creeping shoots and bulbous roots . The upright or slightly hanging shoots are up to 3 meters long and 2 to 5 centimeters in diameter. There are ten to twelve slightly rounded ribs . The ten to twelve whitish to brownish thorns have a darker tip. They are 1 to 3 inches long.

The funnel-shaped, white flowers are slightly tinged pink and open at night. They are up to 25 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 15 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with bristles. The spherical to egg-shaped, red fruits reach a length of up to 4 centimeters. They are edible.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Peniocereus serpentinus is common in the Mexican states of Aguascalientes , Guerrero , Jalisco , México , Michoacán , Morelos , Oaxaca , Puebla , Querétaro and Zacatecas .

It was first described as Cactus serpentinus in 1801 by Mariano Lagasca y Segura and José Demetrio Rodríguez . Nigel Paul Taylor placed the species in the genus Peniocereus in 1987 . Synonymous are Cereus serpentinus (Lag. & Rodr.) DC. , Echinocereus serpentinus (Lag. & Rodr.) Lem. , Nyctocereus serpentinus (Lag. & Rodr.) Britton & Rose .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
