OCI (formerly Orascom Construction Industries ) is an international Dutch fertilizer producer . Until the sale of this part of the activity at the beginning of 2008, it was a major cement producer in the Middle East and Africa, as well as a construction company until this part of the business was spun off in 2015. The company is listed on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange.

history

The company was founded by Onsi Sawiris in Egypt in 1950 and is majority owned by the Sawiris family, who hold 54.48% of the shares. The rest of the shares are in free float. The construction business is the starting point and one of the core companies of the now multinational and highly expansive Orascom Group .

OCI Chief Executive Officer ( CEO ) Nassef Sawiris earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Chicago in 1982 . He is the youngest son of the founder Onsi Sawiris.

The OCI also owned cement factories in Egypt and Algeria, which have an annual production capacity of 13.5 million tons. OCI bought cement plants in Africa and the Middle East and had an average of two new plants built each year. Plants were also under construction in West Africa and Nigeria. In Tunisia, the OCI wants to build a special cement plant for white cement , a building material that is particularly popular in Arab countries for reasons of prestige .

In January 2008 it was announced on the stock exchange that the Orascom Group had sold 100% of all cement manufacturing activities to the world's largest cement manufacturer, the French Lafarge Group based in Lyon .

Orascom Construction Industries is also a major manufacturer of nitrogen fertilizers and the world's largest producer of melamine ; To expand these activities, nitrogen fertilizer and melamine production from the Dutch company DSM was taken over in 2010 . The company is also one of the largest methanol producers.

In January 2013, OCI moved its headquarters from Cairo to Amsterdam. For this purpose, the Dutch OCI NV took over all shares of the previous Egyptian parent company Orascom Construction Industries SAE , which was listed on the Cairo stock exchange, in the form of a share swap. The new OCI NV is listed on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. On March 24, 2014, OCI was added to the AEX index .

With the relocation of the headquarters, a spatial proximity was created to the Belgian construction company BESIX , which is active in the Middle East and with which a joint venture had existed since 1992 and which has since become a 50 percent shareholder .

On November 6, 2014, OCI announced a split of the group. The previous OCI NV, listed on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, has since included the chemical activities, while Orascom Construction Limited, listed on the Cairo Stock Exchange and NASDAQ Dubai, has included the Group's construction activities. The shareholders of OCI NV receive one share in Orascom Construction Limited for every two OCI shares.

On August 6, 2015, OCI and its US competitor CF Industries agreed to take over the main business areas of OCI for 8 billion US dollars . After the acquisition, which should be completed in mid-2016, CF Industries would relocate to the Netherlands and become the world's largest producer of nitrogen fertilizers. OCI should hold a 27.7% stake in CF Industries after the takeover. It should also have a few stakes in nitrogen fertilizer manufacturers in the Netherlands, Egypt and Algeria . In May 2016 it was announced that CF Industries had withdrawn its offer.

By 2017, OCI will build one of the largest methanol plants in the world together with Proman and Helm AG in Beaumont (Texas) .
