The Obed River is a river in the US state of Tennessee that drains part of the Cumberland Plateau . Its course and its tributaries are popular with whitewater enthusiasts.
The Obed River has its origin in Cumberland County , south of Crossville . The US Highway 70 crosses the river between Crossville and the municipal airport. The Little Obed River flows into the Obed River near the bridge of US Highway 70N and the bridge of a disused railway line between Nashville and Knoxville . Shortly thereafter, US Highway 127 and Interstate 40 crossed the river.
The Obed River then flows through a very remote area. It is crossed by State Route 298 ( Genesis Road ) after several kilometers . From this point downstream to its mouth, the Obed River is designated a National Wild and Scenic River . Its tributaries Clear Creek and Daddys Creek also have this protection status.
After flowing into Morgan County , Daddys Creek , ideal for whitewater rafting, meets the Obed River. Downstream is the mouth of Clear Creek . Like Daddys Creek , this is a popular white water river in times of high water flow.
Several kilometers downstream, the Emory River meets the Obed River from the left. Although the Obed River is the larger of the two rivers, the river below its confluence is called the "Emory River".
