The Bad Dübener Obermühle is a historic watermill in the Saxon spa town of Bad Düben in the northern Saxony district . It is located immediately to the north, adjacent to the Bad Dübener Kurpark . The mill system, mentioned for the first time in the 15th century, is fed by the water from the Schleifbach stream running along here , whose water is collected in the mill pond.

Since the beginning of the 2000s it has been extensively restored and refurbished under the care of the Museumsdorf Dübener Heide association and expanded into a regional cultural center on the Dübener Heide .

history

The overshot waterwheel

The Bad Düben watermill was first mentioned in a document in 1434. Originally it consisted of a grinding mill , which around 1600 had three grinding courses. As a result of the Thirty Years' War , in which the city was pillaged and destroyed several times, the mill got into great hardship and its owner asked the Dübener Amtsschösser for debt reduction, which was apparently approved due to the hopeless situation. In 1715, the mill finally had to be rebuilt. A board cutting mill was built next to a grinding mill.

After the Saxon elector refused a fulling mill process that had been applied for in 1740 , this was approved five years later. A hammer mill was used here. Another five years later, in 1750, an oil mill was added. At the beginning of the 1920s, the Obermühle again underwent technical renovations, but ultimately it went out of service at the end of the 1940s. The area was then only used for agriculture. The mill became the property of the city of Bad Düben in 1984.

At the beginning of the 2000s, the reconstruction and renovation of the historic building began. Since 2002 the mill has had an overshot water wheel again and is now fully functional again.

The mill owners are Johann Gottfried Schneider (* 1743; † 1831) and Henriette Louise, b. Richter (* 1751; † 1834) known.

Tourist connections and facilities

Historic mill yard

The upper mill is now part of a mill yard with garden, barn and oven operated by the Museumsdorf Dübener Heide association founded in 1999 . Since the beginning of the 2000s, he has been trying to establish the location around the Obermühle as a tourist destination with cabaret, culture, environmental education, school projects and regional marketing, and to renovate the historic structure of the mill.

In 2013, the Saxon State Ministry for Economics, Labor and Transport , or SMWA for short, approved EUR 762,000 in funding for the renovation of the historic building, which corresponded to 80 percent of the eligible costs.

Post mill

In the immediate vicinity of the water mill, northeast of the adjacent mill pond, is the Düben post mill from 1840, which was reconstructed in 2006. This contains around 70 percent of the historical structure of a mill built in 1840 in today's Schkeuditz district of Glesien .

Moor experience path

Moor basin on the moor adventure trail

The area around the Obermühle is also followed by a moor adventure trail dedicated to the subject of moorland . A genuine tour takes in a 8000 years old bog oak , a Moorlore and along information boards with lots of interesting facts about the bog formation, the mining and processing of bogs. A wooden walkway leads over a so-called "moor pocket", an earth basin created by embankment, which was used by the spa to store moor. A walk-in moor treading pool is also available. The moor adventure trail is open in the summer months (May – September) and is free of charge.

Obermühlenteich

Obermühlenteich

Next to the Obermühle is a pond approx. 130 m long and 60 m wide , which is fed by a branch from the Schleifbach . In the region, however, the Obermühlenteich is often called "Obermüllerteich" colloquially . It is a fishing water and, if necessary, provides a water inflow to the mill wheel of the upper mill.

More mills in Bad Düben

Bergschiffmühle Bad Düben

In addition to the Bad Dübener Obermühle and its neighboring post mill , three other mills can be found in the city area. A so-called Bergschiffmühle is located in the historic castle garden directly at Düben Castle . This ship mill, which dates from the 17th century, was operated on the Mulde leading through Bad Düben until 1956 . Moved to its current location in the 1960s, it was reconstructed in the early 2000s and returned to its original condition from 1905.

Another watermill is the old Düben town mill from the 16th century . Like the upper mill, it once had oil and fulling mill aisles and a board cutting mill. This mill has been owned by the Schüßler family since 1904 and is still in commercial operation to the present day.

Another post mill can be found in the Tiefensee district . It was originally built in 1847 on the district of Delitzsch . It has been at its current location since 1900. Shut down in 1953, it is now sporadically in operation as a foam mill.
