The work had its world premiere on December 15, 1961 in France. In the Federal Republic of Germany, the film first came to the cinema on March 16, 1962.

action

The action begins in 1873, when Russia began a campaign against the Turkmen Khan of Khiva . Tsar Alexander II has given his wife's nephew, the young Prince Serge von Bachenberg, command of the avant-garde . In his youthful zeal, the prince believes that he can excel in battle. The tsarina, however, is concerned about the young man, because she loves him like a son. In desperation, she turns to the national hero Michael Strogoff, whom she knows is loyal to her. Colonel Strogoff immediately went to the vanguard camp. The Khan's spies have got wind of the plan and now want to prevent Strogoff from achieving his goal by all means.

At his first stop, the colonel meets the seductive singer Tatiana Wolskaya. She is an ardent patriot of Turkmenistan and does everything possible to prevent Strogoff from continuing his journey. In the long run, however, she cannot resist the colonel's charm. With the help of his orderly, Strogoff manages to get through to the young prince's camp. However, Bachenberg is not at all pleased when he learns of Strogoff's assignment. Rather, he believes that he only wants to reap new merits for himself .

On the march through the desert, the Russians are repeatedly attacked by the Turkmens. Suddenly a Turkmen appears in the Russian camp who pretends to want revenge on the Khan. Despite Strogoff's warning, Bachenberg followed the advice of the Turkmen and took the path he recommended. Finally, at a poisoned water hole, Bachenberg's troops are encircled by a hostile force. The Russians have no choice but to surrender .

Both Strogoff and Bachenberg are dragged to the Khan's palace. While the prince was being taken hostage, Strogoff was given the task of delivering the message to the Russian military leader that Bachenberg would have to die if the campaign was not stopped immediately. When he leaves, Strogoff meets Tatjana again. She expresses her regret about what happened and confesses her love to the colonel.

When he met General Verevkin in the Russian camp, Strogoff revealed his plan: he would return to Khiva in disguise, sneak up to the prison tower and, by hoisting the Russian flag, give the army standing ready outside the signal to attack. As a result of the surprise attack, Verevkin could then seize the khan. However, it turns out very differently than planned: As soon as Strogoff has reached Khiva, he is overwhelmed by the traitor Vassiliev and dragged into the desert. Buried in the sand, it should serve the jackals to eat. Tatiana, who found out about this, saves Strogoff and takes him to the tower where the prisoner languishes. Now the flag is hoisted too. In the ensuing fight, Vassiliev is killed.

As agreed, General Verevkin raids the khan's camp. In the following battle he can conquer the city. The wounded Bachenberg has to realize that Michael Strogoff is far superior to him. Nevertheless, the prince - along with Strogoff - was honored by Verevkin before the entire army. Afterwards the two are supposed to deliver the news of victory to the Tsar. Tatiana follows the man she loves to Russia.
