Christian Chevallier
Christian Chevallier (born July 12, 1930 in Angers , † September 14, 2008 in Evreux ) was a French jazz pianist , band leader , composer and arranger .
Live and act
Chevallier was born into an artistic family (mother was a singer) and he learned the piano at the age of five. When he heard Jacques Diéval on the radio in 1947 , he decided to become a jazz musician and moved to Paris. From 1948 to 1950 he played in the jazz club "Tabou" a. a. with Don Byas . In 1951 he became a member of the orchestra of the "Rose Rouge" and began to arrange, a. a. for Chet Baker , Lionel Hampton , Sacha Distel , Kenny Clarke ; He was also involved as a pianist on recordings by Dom Garry , Géo Daly , Jean Bonal , Les Blue Stars and Bobby Jaspar . From 1954 he arranged for big bands (for example for Lionel Hampton, Guy Lafitte , Chet Baker, Kenny Clarke) and signed a contract with Columbia (Pathé Marconi). In 1956 he received the Prix Django Reinhardt , the Charles Cros Academy Award and the “Prix Stan Kenton” (for his album “Formidable”). In 1957 he began working as an arranger for variety artists and singers, including such well-known names as Charles Trenet , Juliette Gréco , Claude Nougaro (Chevallier is co-author of “Toulouse”), Gilbert Bécaud , Charles Aznavour and Mireille Mathieu . From 1959 he also wrote film music , a. a. for Michel Boisrond (“Une Parisienne”, 1957), Jean-Pierre Melville (“Deux Hommes dans Manhattan”, 1959) and Didier Kaminka (“Trop c'est trop”, 1975). In the 70s and 80s he also worked with Stéphane Grappelli and Sam Most ; In 1986 he composed a suite for the Orchester National de Jazz under François Jeanneau , which was performed with Kenny Wheeler .
