Obsessed by Cruelty is the debut album by the German thrash metal band Sodom . It was released in the spring of 1986 in Europe on Steamhammer / SPV and in North America on Metal Blade Records . Due to an oversight, the American version appeared with one less title.

backgrounds

The lyrics of the album are inspired by occult themes, Tom Angelripper was concerned with the writings of Aleister Crowley . In retrospect, Angelripper said about the texts that they couldn't be translated properly and that he later asked himself what he actually meant by the lines of text. The music of the songs comes largely from drummer Chris Witchhunter, only for the composition of After the Deluge and Witchhammer Tom Angelripper received credits. The album was recorded twice. The record label was not satisfied with the first version recorded in Berlin and had the band repeat the recordings in a recording studio in Hilpoltstein . Due to a mistake by the record company, the wrong master tape was sent to Metal Blade in the USA, which is why all official CD pressings contain the old version without the track After the Deluge , the new recording is only included on the European LP version. According to Angelripper, about 5,000 copies of this fake version were pressed for the US market. The band rarely plays the songs on the album at concerts because Angelripper claims to have forgotten all the guitar riffs and the current members of Sodom cannot hear them either. Instead, a medley of various songs from the early phase of Sodom is planned.

reception

Götz Kühnemund from the music magazine Rock Hard saw in a contemporary review a "two hundred percent increase compared to the weak mini-LP", the production was clear and powerful and the guitar work of the new guitarist Michael Wulf and another session guitarist was "out of proportion the poor hacking of Grave Violator ”. The bottom line, however, is that the band still plays “bad enough, despite all the improvements, not to lose the old harshness and rawness”.

The album is of great importance for the Thrash and Black Metal sectors and enjoys cult status there. Nuclear Exterminator from Nocturnal Graves called Obsessed by Cruelty "the epitome of Chaotic Metal". The Rock Hard recorded the album in June 2009 in its list of "250 thrash metal albums that you should know" on.
