history

Dosenbach

The company was founded as a shoe store by the Dosenbach family in Bremgarten in 1865 . This previously operated a saddlery business , which was abandoned in favor of the shoe business. The early years were shaped by Franziska Dosenbach , who had to look after her 13 children after the early death of her husband. Under her leadership, other shops were opened in various villages where industrially manufactured shoes were sold. In order to assert itself against the shoemaking trade , Dosenbach set up its own creation department. From 1890, the branch network was supplied by the company's own central warehouse. For this purpose, Franziska Dosenbach's son Carl Dosenbach built his own carriage transport .

Over the decades, the family business grew into a nationwide shoe retailer. In 1973 the shoe magazine C. Dosenbach & Cie AG was sold to Deichmann for lack of a successor . In 1992, the Deichmann Group took over another Swiss shoe retailer, Ochsner Holding, and merged it with Dosenbach to form Dosenbach-Ochsner AG Shoes and Sport .

Ochsner shoe store

The shoe store Ochsner was founded in 1928 by Gottfried Ochsner. He opened his first shoe store in Zurich and called it Volks-Schuhhaus Ochsner . There he mainly sold Swiss shoes. In the following years, Gottfried Ochsner expanded his chain of branches to a total of four stores.

Towards the end of the Second World War , Max Ochsner took over his father's business and in the 1950s and 1960s expanded the chain of branches, especially in Zurich and the surrounding area. At the beginning of the 1970s, Ochsner expanded by taking over various chain stores and opening new branches in western Switzerland . The expansion continued in the 1980s, with the Ochsner Sport division, which was created in 1961, becoming the market leader in the Swiss specialist sporting goods market. In 1992 the entire Ochsner Holding and all of its business activities were sold to the Deichmann Group and merged with the Dosenbach Group. In addition to the common company name, the Ochsner name also remained in the branch network. In 2019, Ochsner Sport is still the market leader in Switzerland with 83 branches.

Acquisitions and Expansion

In 2005 Dosenbach-Ochsner took over the shoe brand Gallus, which was founded in 1880 . Then in 2008 the brand AM (Astor Müller) Shoe Company, founded in Germany in 1975.

In mid-2011, the “Freestyle” sports goods chain Beach Mountain was taken over by Athris Holding and will be continued as an independent brand. The snowboard business founded by Andy Tanner in Zurich in 1985 was taken over by Jelmoli Holding in 1995 and, as part of the Jelmoli demerger, became a financial investment in Athris Holding in 2009.

Since 2014 Dosenbach-Ochsner has also been running the Swiss business of the Deichmann subsidiary MyShoes , founded in 2004 , and the Snipes chain, which specializes in sneakers .
