Octavien de Saint-Gelais

Octavien de Saint-Gelais (* 1468 in Cognac ; † 1502 in Vars , Charente ) was a French cleric , poet and translator of the Renaissance .

biography

Octavien de Saint-Gelais studied theology in Paris at the Collège Sainte-Barbe , at the Sorbonne and at the Collège de Navarre . He became a member of the magnificent court of Charles VIII (1470–1498) in Amboise . At the age of 25, an incurable disease forced him to give up his previously indulgent lifestyle. He entered the clergy . In 1494 Charles VIII transferred the diocese of Angoulême to him . Ocatvien was soon regarded as a bishop , for he reformed monastic rules , cared for the poor and had the churches renovated. He also devoted himself to poetry. Octavien de Saint-Gelais unabashedly made use of the poetic forms of the late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance. Ballads , rondeaux and moritats were among his works , using various combinations of rhymes and meters . He had a particular passion for ancient poets . His French translation of the Aeneid was given to Louis XII. (1462–1515) presented. He also transferred the Heroides of Ovid . In 1502 a plague epidemic forced him to leave his bishopric. He retired to the village of Vars in Charente, where he died shortly afterwards.

Octavien de Saint-Gelais fabulous, vigorous poetry also influenced poets of the next generation, such as Clément Marot (1495–1544).

His nephew was the poet Mellin de Saint-Gelais (approx. 1491–1558).
