Northwester 2 is an offshore wind farm in the Belgian Exclusive Economic Zone in the southern North Sea . The wind farm consists of 23  wind turbines , which together have an installed capacity of 218.5  megawatts .

location

The wind farm is located around 50 kilometers off the coast of Ostend . The Seamade offshore wind farm joins it to the north and the Nobelwind offshore wind farm to the south .

History and construction

In 2018, the financing of the Northwester 2 wind farm , which cost around 700 million euros, was completed.

The first offshore work began in July 2019. The first monopile foundation was also installed in July . The foundations were produced by Bladt Industries in Aalborg , Denmark and delivered to Ostend. The installation of the foundations was completed in November 2019. The erection of the turbines began in December 2019. The installation vessel Vole au vent from Jack de Nul was used for this. In January 2020, electricity was fed into the Belgian grid for the first time. The wind farm was officially completed in mid-May 2020.

technology

23 turbines of the type MHI Vestas V164-9.5 MW with a nominal output of 9.5 megawatts are used. The wind turbines have a rotor diameter of 164 m.

The wind farm is connected to the modular offshore grid platform of the network operator Elia via a 225 kV cable from Nexans . This offshore platform is located around 40 km off the coast of Zeebrugge and combines the power of the Northwester, Rentel and Seamade offshore wind farms . The MOG platform is connected to the mainland via a 220 kV cable.
