The Thanet wind farm is an offshore wind farm in the south-western North Sea off the mouth of the Thames about twelve kilometers northeast of the headland Foreness Point on the coast of Thanet in Kent in England . When it went into operation in September 2010, it was the largest offshore wind farm in the world.

construction

The wind farm consists of 100 wind turbines with Vestas V90-3.0 MW wind turbines with a rotor diameter of 90 m and an installed electrical output of 3 MW each, for a total of around 300 MW. The 100 wind turbines (WEA) are distributed over an area of around 35 km². The North Sea has a water depth of around 20 to 25 m at this point.

The generated electrical energy is stepped up on a transformer platform installed in the sea from a voltage of 33  kV at the exit of the wind turbines to 132 kV. This higher voltage is conducted via two submarine cables to a substation on land at the Richborough Power Station ( 51 ° 18 ′ 37.4 ″  N , 1 ° 20 ′ 44.7 ″  E ) , which was closed in 1996, on the site of the former military port of Richborough Sandwich is close to the port , where it is fed into the national power grid.

history

North Hoyle wind farm is part of "Round 2" of the Crown Estate's offshore wind farm development program , which began in early 2004.

The wind farm was developed by Thanet Offshore Wind Ltd , a Warwick Energy Ltd project company. Warwick gave the project to the hedge fund Christofferson, Robb & Co. , which in turn sold the project to Vattenfall UK in 2008 .

The wind farm was officially inaugurated on September 22nd, 2010 in the presence of the British Energy Minister Chris Huhne . It thus replaced the Horns Rev II wind farm as the most powerful offshore wind farm in the world. On the occasion of the opening, it was often wrongly described in the media as "the largest wind farm in the world" ; However, at the time it went into operation it was actually only the largest offshore wind farm in the world (see also list of offshore wind farms ).
