The Horns Rev offshore wind farm is the first offshore wind farm to be built in the North Sea . It is located off the Danish coast west of Esbjerg on the Horns Rev sandbank , which extends off the coast of Blåvand on the west coast of Jutland and extends up to 20 nautical miles from the coast.
The total output of the wind turbines installed in Horns Rev is 369 MW, with which a total of 1,400 GWh of electricity are generated in an average year . While the average yield of "Horns Rev 1" is 600 GWh, "Horns Rev 2" comes to 800 GWh, which corresponds to a capacity factor of around 43%. This can supply around 350,000 households with electricity.
In August 2019, the third expansion stage Horns Rev 3 with 406 MW was officially put into operation. It should provide enough electrical energy to supply 425,000 Danish households with electricity.
Horns Rev 1
In 2002, the Horns Rev 1 wind farm was built by the Danish company Elsam 14–20 km off the coast southwest of Blåvands Huk . 80 Vestas V80-2MW wind turbines with a total output of 160 MW were installed on an area of 20 km² . Around 150,000 households can be supplied with the energy generated. The construction costs for Horns Rev 1 amounted to 270 million euros. In 2004, all 80 systems had to be temporarily dismantled and repaired on land due to technical damage caused by the harsh conditions at sea before they could be reinstalled. Since 2005 the wind farm has been owned 60% by Vattenfall and 40% by Ørsted .
Horns Rev 2
In May 2008, Ørsted started building a second wind farm about ten nautical miles northwest of the first, called Horns Rev 2 . The 91 Siemens SWT 2.3-93 wind turbines with a total output of 209 MW were built on an area of 35 km² in the Danish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), approx. 30 kilometers west of Blåvands Huk on the Danish west coast. Horns Rev 2 is capable of powering 200,000 households and owned by Ørsted . The construction costs amounted to 480 million euros. The official commissioning of the wind farm took place on September 17, 2009, in the presence of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen . Ørsted uses a site in Esbjerg as a maintenance and service base.
Horns Rev 3

North of Horns Rev 1 and northeast of Horns Rev 2, construction work began in October 2017 on a further wind farm field called Horns Rev 3 . 49 wind turbines of the type MHI Vestas V164 were installed , the nominal output of which was increased to 8.3 MW (compared to 8.0 MW in the basic version) on monopile foundations. Originally, 50 V164s with 8.0 megawatts were planned. The operator of the wind farm is Vattenfall, the total output is 406.7 MW. The financing was completed in June 2016.
The foundation work with the monopile foundations began in October 2017 and was completed in January 2018. The first turbine was installed in July 2018.
The official commissioning of the wind farm took place in August 2019, in the presence of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and the Minister for Climate, Energy and Supply Dan Jørgensen . Electricity generation in the Energinet.dk network had already started at the end of 2018. The electricity production costs are given as DKK 0.77 per kilowatt hour (EUR 0.10 / kWh).
