The Ogden River is a river with its headwaters about 35 miles long in Weber County in the state of Utah in the United States .

description

The three headwaters of the Ogden River ( North Fork , Middle Fork and South Fork Ogden River ) begin in the Wasatch Range in Weber County and meet at Pineview Reservoir near Huntsville . The river then flows southwest through Ogden Canyon , through the city of Ogden , before flowing into the Weber River on the border between West Haven and Marriott-Slaterville . From the dam to its confluence with the Weber River, the Ogden River proper is about 16 km (10 miles ) in length .

The Ogden River is older than the Wasatch Range. As the mountains slowly rose at the Wastach Fault for the past 15 million years, the river was able to traverse the landscape by creating Ogden Canyon, a canyon about 9.7 kilometers long with a series of smaller side canyons . At the west end of Ogden Canyon is the town of Ogden and at the east end is Pineview Dam .

The Ogden River is named after the 19th century fur trader Peter Skene Ogden . It has served as a source of water for irrigation since the beginning of the 20th century. The Pineview Dam was completed in 1937 as part of a series of projects by the Bureau of Reclamation as part of the Ogden River Project. This aims to provide 25,000 acres (100 km²) of nearby land with irrigation. Other related projects include the Ogden Brigham Canal , which connects the river with Brigham City to the north, the reconstructed Ogden Canyon Conduit, and the South Ogden Highline Canal .
