Ohlson 8: 8 is a Swedish sailing yacht designed by boat designer Einar Ohlson and built by Bröderna Ohlson AB and later Malö Yachts AB. The Ohlson 8: 8 was primarily designed as a cruising yacht for families and was first presented by its designer in 1972 in Germany at the Hamburg boat exhibition.

construction

The new construction surprised with an extremely wide stern , a vertical mirror and a high level of living comfort below deck. Up until that time there was no saloon with full standing height and space for six bunks , a closed toilet room with a height of 1.78 m, a complete navigation system and pantry and plenty of storage space on sailboats less than 9 meters in length . The Ohlson 8: 8 was constructively ahead of its time. Light plastic segments were installed below deck, which were provided with wooden panels and doors to enhance the appearance. This was used in the toilet room, forecastle, galley and engine cladding. Furthermore, the cabin ceiling received an inner cladding made of plastic. This furnishing concept only caught on much later in series shipbuilding.

The Ohlson 8: 8 also sailed very quickly and was very successful on the regatta courses at the time. The reason was in the underwater hull, because the construction showed a fin keel with a low-lying ballast bomb, in the foredeck area a flat section trimmed for speed and a rudder with a narrow forefin for stabilization. This configuration allows good maneuverability at a time when shared lateral plans were not yet a matter of course.

The Ohlson 8: 8 is a toppgetakelte sloop with a baby stay , typical of the former International Offshore Rule constructed (IOR) yachts. It therefore also has a comparatively small mainsail for larger headsails . The yacht was equipped with a Volvo Penta engine, MD 7A, two-cylinder, 13 HP with reversing gear and 12 volt starter motor.

history

In 1969, the renowned Swedish Kryssarsklubben (German: Kreuzerklub) asked well-known boat designers such as Lars-Olof Norlin , Einar Ohlson and Olle Enderlein to design a well-sailing cruising yacht under 9 meters in length for a wider sailing audience. The Ohlson 8: 8 won the tender and met the taste of the times at moderate prices.

The first two Ohlson 8: 8 were built in 1970. In 1971 construction began not only at the Gothenburg shipyard but also at the Karlskronavarvet shipyard, but after 25 Ohlson 8: 8 the company went bankrupt. Production was relocated to Kungsviken on the boat builder island of Orust . As visionary as the designer Einar Ohlson was, his management was just as desolate. In 1975 Bröderna Ohlson went bankrupt and Malö Yachts took over. When production started on the west coast of Sweden, the keel weight was increased by 100 kg. From then on, the base of the fixings was reinforced with 80 millimeter thick laminates . The total weight of the boat increased to 3600 kg.

In the autumn of 1978, production moved to Lysekil , as Kungshamns Marin took over Gullmarswerft from Mölnlycke Marin. A new mast profile was tried out and in this context a switch was made from the Drehreff to the Bindereff .

Production was stopped in 1981 after about 325 boats. Most of the Ohlson 8: 8 were sold in semi-finished or sailing-clear versions with basic equipment. As an extra, there was a de-luxe version for an extra charge: four teak hatches under the bunks in the foredeck and cabin, cupboard with sliding teak doors over the port back cushions in the cabin. A drawer in the card table with a folding screen. Teak foot rails on deck and gratings for cockpit floor and benches.
