Oldřich Nový (born August 7, 1899 in Prague ; † March 15, 1983 ibid) was a Czech actor and theater director.

Life

Born in the Prague suburb of Žižkov , Oldřich Nový took acting lessons after completing an apprenticeship as a typesetter and then performed in cabaret and on the stage. At first Nový played in Ostrava and Brno , but he returned to Prague , where in 1934 he founded the Nové divadlo .

He made his film debut in the late stages of silent films . Nový mostly appeared in comedies and musical comedies. Towards the end of the 1930s and under the German occupation, he became one of the most popular film actors in his home country. The female stars Adina Mandlová and Nataša Gollová were his partners repeatedly , his preferred director was Martin Frič . From 1954 to 1959 Nový was the artistic director of the Karlín Music Theater , after which he worked at the Prague Conservatory .
