The Oldenstädter See (also colloquially : O-See) is an inland lake in Oldenstadt , a district of the Hanseatic city of Uelzen in the Lower Saxony district of Uelzen . The quarry pond developed into a bathing lake with a walking path surrounding it, surrounded by natural vegetation , reeds and beach areas .

location

The Oldenstädter See is in the immediate vicinity of the Elbe Lateral Canal . It can be reached from the surrounding towns of Oldenstadt, Uelzen (around 2 kilometers away), Emmendorf (around 4 km away), Rätzlingen (around 6 km away) and Oetzen (around 7 km away).

history

The quarry pond developed from a sand pit that was created in the 1970s when large quantities of sand were extracted for the construction of the Elbe Lateral Canal. The current size of the water surface was created after sand was removed again at the end of the 1990s to build the bypass .

Recreation

The approximately 15.5 hectare large and maximally 6 meters deep lake is fed by groundwater and is used as a bathing lake and for local recreation . The area is divided into a natural biotope , an area for surfing and an unsupervised bathing area (with two beach areas totaling 290 m long). The lake has had excellent bathing water quality since 2015 (in accordance with the Lower Saxony Bathing Water Ordinance as implementation of the EU Bathing Water Directive ). During the bathing season from May 15th to September 15th of each year, tests of the bathing water are carried out monthly at three monitoring points and published by the Lower Saxony State Health Office. The water has mean values (2015-2018) at a temperature of 27.4 ° C and a visibility depth of 1.50 m.

When the weather is nice, a kiosk and sanitary facilities are open in a beach area . A barbecue hut may be used with the approval of the city of Uelzen . A dog beach is designated in the southwest area , otherwise dogs must be kept on a leash.

The lake is surrounded by trees and natural vegetation through which a circular hiking trail leads. The bank is lined with reeds in places.

The historic Rauchhaus , a brick building with a thatched roof , in which various events take place, is located on the lake . The two- column house was built in 1736 in Hanstedt I , demolished there in 1971 and rebuilt in 1986 on the lake. The local fishing club uses this typical farmhouse in the Lüneburg Heath for club purposes and the lake for fishing , especially for pike , carp and tench .

In winter ice hockey is played on the lake and there is a toboggan hill .

At the lake there is a small parking area on the street Zum See and a large parking lot on the beach.
