Olivier Darbellay

Olivier Nicolas Darbellay (* 1974 in Bern ) is a Swiss horn player .

Life

Darbtellay comes from a family of musicians; his father is the composer Jean-Luc Darbellay (* 1946). He first studied cello with Patrick Demenga and Peter Hörr and horn with Thomas Müller and David Johnson at the Bern University of Music and Theater (graduated in 1996). He also studied horn with Bruno Schneider at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg im Breisgau (graduated in 1998) and natural horn at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis . In 2000 he was awarded international prizes.

He has appeared at numerous festivals, such as the Lucerne Festival , the Berliner Festwochen and the Wratislavia Cantans . He has appeared as a soloist with several orchestras. In addition to baroque and classical music, his focus is on contemporary music . He performed chamber music a. a. with Joshua Bell , Akiko Suwanai , Sol Gabetta , Siegfried Palm , Konstantin Lifschitz , Heinz Holliger and Christoph Prégardien in appearance. He also plays u. a. with the Collegium Novum Zurich , the Bach Collegium Japan , the Ensemble Contrechamps and the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra Toronto. Darbellay premiered several pieces, including Holliger's Duo Induuchlen for natural horn and countertenor in 2006 .

He is principal horn player in the Bern Symphony Orchestra as well as in the Basel Chamber Orchestra and in the Gstaad Festival Orchestra . He is also a professor at the Haute École de Musique in Lausanne and at the Institute for Classical and Church Music at the Lucerne School of Music .
