Olivier Rousteing (born September 13, 1985 in Bordeaux ) is a French fashion designer and art director of the Parisian fashion house Balmain since 2011 .

biography

Rousteing was born in Bordeaux in 1985 and was adopted at the age of one. He does not know his birth parents. He grew up in Bordeaux. First he began to study law, but he dropped out. He moved to Paris , where he attended the École supérieure des arts et techniques de la mode (ESMOD) fashion school. After a year he stopped there and started traveling. In 2003 he sent his sketchbook to Roberto Cavalli , whereupon he was accepted and started his career as a stylist with Roberto Cavalli in Rome. Soon after, he was promoted to designer of ready-to-wear collections at Roberto Cavalli, where he stayed for a total of five years until he was contacted by the Parisian fashion house Balmain in 2009 . He got a job at Balmain as head of the studio for prêt-à-porter fashion for women and moved back to Paris. He worked with Christophe Decarnin , who had been Art Director at Balmain since 2010. On April 26, 2011, when he was only 25, he replaced Christophe Decarnin as Art Director of Balmain. In October 2011 he presented his first ready-to-wear collection for Balmain.

Through his strong activities in social networks, above all Instagram, he established Balmain as one of the most famous French fashion houses on the Internet, alongside Chanel and Louis Vuitton . With the help of celebrity friends like Kim Kardashian , Kelly Rowland , Jennifer Lopez , Rihanna , Beyoncé , Justin Bieber , Nicki Minaj , Chris Brown and various models, including models from Victoria's Secret , Rousteing managed to make Balmain the first French fashion label, that broke the 1 million follower mark on Instagram .

In 2017 he worked with the dancer and choreographer Sébastien Bertaud and created costumes for the ballet Renaissance at the Paris Opera .

In 2018, Rousteing created costumes for Beyoncé and her dancers for her tour On The Run II .

Private

Rousteing is openly gay. He posed naked for the March 2015 issue of LGBT magazine Têtu .
