Olivier Winterstein (called Olivier von Winterstein ; * February 10, 1951 in Cannes ; † July 28, 2004 in Dresden ) was a French musicologist and orchestra director (executive director), most recently of the Dresden Philharmonic (1992-2004).

Life

Olivier Winterstein completed his school education in Paris . He studied singing in Salzburg with Max Lorenz and Maria Reining and law in Vienna . With this double training he took over the post of managing director of the Viennese instrumental ensemble in 1975 . In 1979 he received his doctorate in law in Vienna.

In the following two years he was executive secretary of the International Music Center (IMZ) in Vienna and in 1982 became director of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra . In 1983 and 1984 he was responsible for the press and marketing of the Midem music fair ("Marché International du Disque et de l'Edition musicale") in Cannes, which is where the directors of the Orchester National du Capitole de Toulouse (1984–1987) and the Orchester National de France (1987-1989) joined. 1989–1991 he was personal advisor to the Toulouse general music director Michel Plasson .

After German reunification , Winterstein became director of the Dresden Philharmonic in 1992 . He was responsible for consolidating the orchestra after the social upheaval in East Germany. He was involved in the founding of the Dresden Philharmonic Friends' Association , was a member of the supervisory board of the Heinrich Schütz Conservatory and the municipal concert and congress society . He was able to increase the international reputation of the Dresden Philharmonic through concert tours, and he also ensured that the orchestra resumed its record activities, which had been interrupted since the fall of the Berlin Wall as a result of the dissolution of VEB Deutsche Schallplatten Berlin . In addition to recordings by chief conductors Herbert Kegel (1977–1985) and Jörg-Peter Weigle (1986–1994) that have already been made for the GDR label Eterna but have not been released , Berlin Classics also released new recordings on CD on his initiative. The Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk accompanied the work of the Philharmonic and thus ensured an increased media presence.

As the successor of the chief conductor Jörg-Peter Weigle, he engaged his former Toulouse boss Michel Plasson (1994–2001).

Winterstein died on July 28, 2004 after a serious illness. His successor, Anselm Rose , who was already established at the time , therefore took up the post prematurely as interim director.
