Olvi Mangasarian

Olvi Leon Mangasarian (born January 12, 1934 in Baghdad , † March 15, 2020 ) was an American mathematician and computer scientist .

life and career

Mangasarian studied electrical engineering at Princeton University with a bachelor's degree in 1954 and a master's degree in 1955 and received his doctorate in applied mathematics from Harvard University in 1959 under Bernard Budiansky (Stresses in the Plastic Range around a Normally Loaded Circular Hole in an Infinite Sheet) . From 1959 to 1967 he was a mathematician at the Shell Development Corporation of the Royal Dutch Shell and from 1965 to 1967 he was a lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley . From 1967 he was Associate Professor and from 1969 Professor at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , most recently as John von Neumann Professor . After his retirement he was at the University of California, San Diego .

research

Mangasarian dealt with mathematical optimization (the Mangasarian-Fromovitz constraint qualification is named after him and Stanley Fromovitz ), data mining , classification, machine learning and support vector machines .

His PhD students include Stephen M. Robinson and Michael C. Ferris .
