The dressage at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin took place on 12 and 13 August at the Maifeld , next to the Olympic Stadium instead.

A total of 29 riders from 11 different nations took part.

The Olympic champion was the German Heinz Pollay with his horse Kronos . His compatriot Friedrich Gerhard won silver on absinthe and bronze went to the Austrian Alois Podhajsky with Nero

The results achieved in this individual competition were also counted as results for the team competition. A dressage task should be completed by each athlete within 17 minutes, with half a point deducted for each second over the time limit. There were 40 different movements during one round. For each movement, each of the five judges gave a score from 0 to 10. This score was multiplied by the movement coefficient. Each judge's score was applied on a point-by-place system . This means that the rider with the highest number of points received 1 point from each referee, the rider with the second-highest number of points received 2 points, etc. These points from each of the five judges were totaled and resulted in the total number of points. The athlete with the fewest points was the winner. This system was only used in the individual, in the team competition the points awarded by the judges counted.
