Japan took part in the VII Winter Olympics in 1956 in the Italian municipality of Cortina d'Ampezzo with a delegation of ten athletes in five disciplines, all of them men. The only medal win went to the ski racer Chiharu Igaya , who secured the silver medal in the slalom. In the medal table, Japan was the eleven best nation.

The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was Hiroshi Yoshizawa , who competed in both ski jumping and Nordic combined. In ski jumping he finished 13th, in Nordic combined he could not finish the competition.
