As part of the four-day qualifying tournament, Kazakhstan and Germany secured the two remaining starting places in the Olympic ice hockey tournament. The density of performance between the qualifying participants was particularly evident in the fact that all four teams had the chance to get one of the coveted tickets to Salt Lake City before the last matchday. Germany went into the last game one point ahead of Kazakhstan and hosts Switzerland. With the defeat of the Germans in the direct duel against the Kazakh women, they secured one of the two starting positions. The German players, on the other hand, had to hope that the Japanese would win points against Switzerland, which also happened with a 2-2 draw. Due to the direct comparison in favor of Germany, Germany secured second place ahead of Switzerland and Japan.
