One Day Crossing is a Hungarian short drama film directed by Joan Stein in 2001 , about a Jewish woman who disguised herself as a Christian during the Holocaust in order to protect her family. The film was nominated for Best Short Film for the 2001 Academy Awards.

The action takes place on October 15, 1944 in Budapest , Hungary. The government had surrendered to the Allies , the Arrow Cross members were in power. The character of Teresa protects her children by denying their religious identity and posing as a Christian. When her husband rescues a Jewish boy and brings him to shelter, she is confronted with questions of identity versus the chance of survival in war.

Joan Stein began filming in Budapest in 1999 ; One Day Crossing was her thesis at Columbia University . After several months of preparation, she began working with Christina Lazaridi, who herself had some ideas for a film about the Second World War . The original film script was in English, but was later translated into Magyars for authenticity .
