Corozal is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Sucre in Colombia .

geography

Corozal is located in the northwest of Sucre , in the Sabanas sub- region , 13 km from Sincelejo , at an altitude of 174 m above sea level. NN and has an average annual temperature of about 28 ° C. The municipality borders on Morroa and Los Palmitos to the north, El Roble to the south, San Juan de Betulia and Sincé to the east , and Sampués and Sincelejo to the west .

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the indigenous peoples of the Finzenúes and the Turbacos lived in the area of today's Corozal municipality . The area was conquered by the Spaniards with the aim of getting gold and other riches. From 1770 Corrozal was initially a Corregimiento of Cartagena . In 1775 Corozal received the status of a municipality.
