occupation

One Week is a Canadian drama and road movie with Joshua Jackson in the lead role. Michael McGowan worked here as a director, screenwriter and producer at the same time. Just like the German cult film Knockin 'on Heaven's Door , the film takes up the theme "What would you do if you only had a little time to live?" Much of the plot is narrated by an off-voice . It premiered on September 8, 2008 at the Toronto International Film Festival . The following spring it was then shown in Canadian cinemas.

action

Ben Tyler, a Canadian English teacher with no particular devotion, was diagnosed with blood cancer at a young age with extremely low chances of cure. He overcomes the life crisis by putting all therapies on hold and going on a biker tour through the country. He drives around without a plan and visits various amusement parks and other sights of his homeland. He gets to know different people and their fates. In addition, he philosophizes about life and lets pass his own review. Having arrived on the west coast of Canada, he drifts in the sea on a rented surfboard and makes a decision.

He returns to his fiancee, Samantha, only to announce the breakup. During his adventurous trip, he picked up the wisdom “if you wonder if you love, you don't”. Ben moves back in with his parents.

background

Ben's motorcycle

The road movie was shot largely on the original locations in Canada . Ben's stops included the dinosaur park near Calgary and the bronze statue of the exceptional athlete Terry Fox , who suffered a similar fate as the protagonist Ben. The luxury hotel Ben is staying at is the castle-like Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in Banff National Park , which is said to have inspired Stephen King to Shining . Ben's motorcycle is a Norton 850 Commando , built in 1973.

The film budget is estimated at 2 million Canadian dollars. The Mulmur Feed Company was responsible for the production. In Germany, the DVD for the film is distributed by Ascot Elite Home Entertainment. Sales started on April 19, 2010.

Soundtrack

“No artists from big labels were used for the film music. Instead, it's the little boys and girls who paint a picture of what a trip through Canada feels like and sounds like. "

criticism

The film received mostly good reviews. Only occasionally was the rather dominant voiceover described as annoying. The soundtrack received great recognition. The selection of the songs was well matched to the mood of the respective scenes.

"One Week - The Adventure of His Life" is one of those films that know how to shine without a big spectacle and fuss. A 90-minute declaration of love for the country and life that too often - in everyday life - passes us by. This is realized via an interplay of commentary and direct action - whereby the moderation is quite philosophical. […] Besides, the wonderful landscape of Canada shows itself, along with some sights, and a pinch of situation comedy / humor was also interspersed. […] Joshua Jacksons is there Presentation very convincing. He perfectly reproduces the character of Ben in its ups and downs - its breaks. The soundtrack for the film was also very pleasant, the pieces from the New Country department nestle perfectly into what is shown successful ending, which rounds off the work appropriately and harbors a surprise, knows how to support the good overall impression. [...] "One Week" is a film for the quiet Hours - no extremely light fare, but also no nerve-wracking thrill. "

- TV cult

“Unfortunately, the German dubbing didn't work at all. The spokesman for the film should be known to everyone as an RTL spokesman from the Tine Wittler apartment show. When he speaks, unfortunately, no emotions arise and you think about the lower-class TV on RTL all the time. Furthermore, various voices simply do not fit their characters. "
