The Atlas orchid ( Ophrys atlantica ) is a kind of the genus Ragwurzen ( Ophrys ) in the family of the Orchid Family (Orchidaceae).
description
This herbaceous perennial plant has two spherical to egg-shaped tubers as persistence organs and reaches a height of between 15 and 30 cm. At the base of the stem there are one or two lanceolate scale leaves . Three to five leaves are grouped together in a rosette, and in the lower half of the stem you can see a sheathed leaf.
The inflorescence comprises one to four flowers , in which the bracts are longer than the ovary . The egg-shaped sepals appear yellow-green, the middle one is bent forward, while the lateral ones point to the side at right angles. The bald, tongue-shaped petals are greenish to brownish in color, they are bent backwards and they are wavy at the edge. The black-purple lip is velvety short-haired. In the middle it is bent up like a saddle, and in front it appears strongly trilobed and convexly arched. The middle lobe is broadly triangular and outlined in front. The flat mark is colored gray to blue-violet.
The flowering period extends from March to June.

The distribution area extends over Morocco and Algeria and the south of Spain , where it is limited to the province of Málaga .
You can find this species on bushy grasslands , garrigues , light deciduous and coniferous forests with moderately dry, base-rich , but not always calcareous soils. In the mountains you will find the Atlas orchid of 300 meters to a height of 1,500 m meters.
