Austrocylindropuntia floccosa is a species of plant in the genus Austrocylindropuntia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet floccosa is derived from the Latin word floccose and means 'with tufts of soft hair'. It refers to the bristly, hairy glochids of the species. Orator Fuller Cook described the plants in an article from 1917 as "Polar Bear Cactus" because of their appearance.

Austrocylindropuntia floccosa grows extensively branched and forms wide mats or compact pads. The short cylindrical, sometimes ellipsoidal to almost spherical shoot sections are up to 15 centimeters long. On them there are cusps arranged in a spiral . Curved , interwoven or straight, glochid-like , multi-row hairs emerge from the areoles on them , which can also be missing. The rather long, persistent, dark green leaf rudiments are subpulate and up to 7 millimeters long. There are few thorns . Often there are two. They are protruding, pretty, yellow and straight. Their length is about 2 centimeters.
The yellow or orange flowers are 2.5 to 3 inches long. The tip of the pericarpel is covered with thornless areoles. The truncated, spherical, sometimes humped fruits are only slightly hairy. They reach about 3 centimeters in diameter and are hidden between the shoot sections.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
The distribution area of Austrocylindropuntia floccosa extends from northern Peru to the Bolivian departments of La Paz and Cochabamba, where it is distributed in the highland areas of the Andes at altitudes of 3500 to 4600 meters.
The first description as Opuntia floccosa by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck was published in 1845. Friedrich Ritter placed them in the genus Austrocylindropuntia in 1981 . Further nomenclature synonyms are Tephrocactus floccosus (Salm-Dyck) Backeb. (1936) and Maihueniopsis floccosa (Salm-Dyck) R. Kiesling (1998) .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
