Local attraction
In Oquawka there is a memorial stone that commemorates a circus elephant named Norma Jean . This fell victim to a lightning strike on July 17, 1972. The pachyderm belonged to a small circus that was a guest in Oquawka at the time. Norma Jean was buried at the point of impact and the circus went bankrupt a year after losing its main attraction. Later, the local pharmacist Wade Meloan campaigned for a memorial stone to be erected on the site of the grave.
