The Orfeo Saxophone Quartet is a professional saxophone quartet in the classic line-up with soprano , alto , tenor and baritone saxophone .

Members of the quartet are: Fabian Pablo Müller (soprano saxophone), Jörg Maria Ortwein (alto saxophone), Alexej Khrushchov (tenor saxophone) and Hannes Tipelius (baritone saxophone). The saxophone quartets from Austria have devoted themselves to works of the Viennese classic , baroque and contemporary composers. There are currently four CD recordings with works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Edvard Grieg , Johann Sebastian Bach and others. Particular attention is paid to the recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's Musical Sacrifice in an arrangement for saxophone and harpsichord .

The name Orfeo Saxophone Quartet is based on the singer Orpheus of Greek mythology as a program. The repertoire includes classical and baroque music, as well as tango , jazz and new music . One of the quartet's greatest successes is the interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach's Italian Concerto on the occasion of a birthday portrait of the SWR on Martin Walser's 75th birthday in the Baden-Baden Theater.

The Orfeo Saxophone Quartet was founded in 1994 by the saxophonist and music teacher Jörg Maria Ortwein (* 1961 in Kempten / Allgäu) with students of his saxophone class at the Vorarlberg State Conservatory . The line-up has changed several times since then.

Fabian Pablo Müller

Fabian-Pablo Mueller ( soprano saxophone ), born on August 14, 1980 in Munich . In September 1998 he began studying music at the State Conservatory for Vorarlberg with Jörg Maria Ortwein. The young artist is a multiple competition prize winner. In 1998 he received the 1st Federal Youth Music Prize, in 2003 he was the 2nd winner of the “Audience Award” at the Schleswig-Holstein International Woodwind Competition. In 2001 he received a Richard Wagner grant and a grant from the state of Vorarlberg. Concert performances at home and abroad made him known to the public. This was followed by invitations as a soloist with the Bad Reichenhall Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia de Medellin (Colombia) and the United World Philharmonic Youthorchestra, with concerts in Turin (I) and Bonn . His saxophone studies led him to master classes with Claude Delangle (Paris), Jean-Ives Fourmeau (Paris) and Jean-Dennis Michat (Lyon). He was invited by ORF for an artist portrait and a radio recording for January 2002. Fabian-Pablo Mueller has been a member of the Orfeo Saxophone Quartet since January 1999. In May 2001 he completed his music studies at the State Conservatory for Vorarlberg with distinction. His further study paths led him to the Musikhochschule Basel (CH) to study Markus Weiss, to the Hochschule für Musik Hans-Eisler in Berlin and to the University of the Arts Berlin to Johannes Ernst. In 2002/2003 he held masterclasses in Medellin, (Colombia) at the Universidad de Antioquia in the subject of classical saxophone. In 2006 he received a scholarship from the German Music Council and was a finalist in the solo rating of the German Music Council Competition. Since the summer of 2007 he has been a lecturer at the Weingarten University of Education and since the winter of 2007 he has been teaching at the State Conservatory of Vorarlberg.

Jörg Maria Ortwein

Jörg Maria Ortwein ( alto saxophone ), born in Kempten / Allgäu, has been teaching at the Vorarlberg State Conservatory since 1989. In addition, he works as a freelance musician in various line-ups and solo performances in the fields of classical and improvised music and as an orchestral musician in various orchestras such as the Bamberg Symphony, the Stuttgart Philharmonic, the Hessian Radio Orchestra and many more.

Alexei Khrushchov

Alexej Khrushchov ( tenor saxophone ), born in Mogilew / Belarus , studied saxophone and conducting at the "Glinka Music School Minsk ", then at the "Belarusian State Academy of Music" (academic and pedagogical master's degree). He then continued his studies with Daniel Gauthier at the Detmold / Dortmund University of Music (diploma in artistic training). He was a winner of various national and international competitions, such as B. International Festival of Brass Music “Surmy-98” (Ukraine). Since 2002 he has been a music teacher at the Württembergisches Allgäu youth music school. As a soloist and ensemble musician, he is active in the saxophone quartets "Orfeo Saxophone Quartet" and "Newton Saxophone Quartet" in various projects (such as "Süßstoff" with Christoph Süß at the Volkstheater in Munich). Regular participation in the "EnCasa" series and in the concerts of Stadtkapelle Wangen im Allgäu, Städtorchester Württembergisches Allgäu.

Hannes Tipelius

Hannes Tipelius (baritone saxophone), b. 1988 in Kufstein, received his first saxophone lessons at the age of nine at the Landesmusikschule Wörgl with Josef Rangger. He attended the Musikgymnasium Feldkirch and then began the IGP bachelor's degree. He studied with Jörg Maria Ortwein and since 2007 with Fabian Pablo Müller. He graduated with honors in June 2011. The current master’s degree at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts rounds off his training. Hannes Tipelius was a soloist with Prima la musica and chamber music with Gradus ad parnassum. He attended numerous master classes and has already played with the Vorarlberg Symphonic Wind Orchestra, the Vorarlberg State Symphony Orchestra and the Upper Swabian Chamber Philharmonic. He is a member of the Military Music Vorarlberg, the Orfeo Saxophone Quartet and the Xi Saxophone Quartet.
