An orientation course can be structured in different ways. On the one hand, an orientation course can include individual, already existing courses that have been specially selected for the orientation course, e.g. B. at the University of Bayreuth . On the other hand, as at the Freiburg University of Education , the program can also consist of modules that have been specially designed for orientation studies. A mixture of systematic orientation (through a program of specially designed events) and free orientation (through attending regular courses), on the other hand, is offered, for example, by the Goethe orientation course at the GU Frankfurt ., Which covers both the humanities and social sciences and the natural and life sciences includes. In addition to offers that last one semester, there are also one-year programs, such as at the TU Berlin , the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg of the TU Munich , or the Technical University of Hamburg, which give students an insight into various scientific-technical courses. Other providers of a one-year orientation course are, for example, the Leibniz Kolleg and Salem Kolleg , which cooperate with the University of Konstanz and cover a broader academic spectrum.

The orientation offers of the Alanus University for Art and Society in Alfter near Bonn and the University of Witten / Herdecke offer not only professional orientation, but also special events with information about career prospects and personal development. Another element of an orientation course is what is known as "job shadowing", in which students gain practical insights into the respective occupational field before they start studying.
