life and work

Ghiglia's family came from Turin. After the early death of his father, he had to do odd jobs at an early age, including as a street vendor. As a painter, Ghiglia was initially self-taught, occasionally visiting the studios of Guglielmo Micheli and Ugo Manaresi in Livorno. He became a friend of Amedeo Modigliani, with whom he attended painting class, as well as Llewelyn Lloyd and Anthony De Witt . With Modigliani in 1901, when he was on Capri and Venice, an important correspondence arose for Modigliani's biography.

In Florence, Ghiglia had contact with intellectuals working around the Leonardo magazine ( Giovanni Papini , Giuseppe Prezzolini , Ugo Ojetti , Ardengo Soffici ). He was initially influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites , Böcklin and Franz von Stuck , and painted many portraits. He later studied the French symbolists Bonnard , Vallotton , Vuillard and Denis . In 1909 he met the Florentine painter and collector Gustavo Sforni , who supported him for several years.

In 1914 Ghiglia went to Castiglioncello , where he concentrated on interior views and still lifes in the style of Cézanne . In 1918 he returned to Florence. In 1920 he took part in the group exhibition Arte Italiana Contemporanea in the Galleria Pesaro in Milan , and in 1926 in the first Mostra del Novecento Italiano . 1929 had the first own exhibition in the Galleria Pesaro . He spent the last years of his life in increasing isolation. Ghiglia died in Florence in 1945.

Today his works are mainly in private collections. His son Valentino Ghiglia was also a painter, his grandson is the guitarist Oscar Ghiglia .
