Giuseppe Prezzolini (born January 27, 1882 in Perugia , † July 14, 1982 in Lugano ) was an Italian journalist, writer and publisher.

life and work

Prezzolini was born in Perugia, the son of a prefect . Due to his father's job, the family moved often in his youth. Prezzolini's mother died in his childhood.

Prezzolini was an autodidact. He began his journalistic work at the age of 21 and founded the magazine Leonardo in Florence together with Giovanni Papini in 1903 and also worked in Enrico Corradini's nationalistic magazine Il Regno until 1905 . In the former he was (under the pseudonym Giuliano il Sofista ) a champion of an "anti-rationalist and mystical philosophy", in the latter he supported the nationalist movement and in particular the rights of the bourgeoisie against socialism. Around 1908 he approached the idealistic ideas of Benedetto Croce and developed sympathy for trade union socialism. Out of this new direction he founded the weekly La Voce in 1908 , which - thanks in part to many famous authors such as Croce, Giovanni Amendola , Gaetano Salvemini , Emilio Cecchi , Romolo Murri , Luigi Einaudi - gained some importance with articles on literature, politics and society. and which he headed with one interruption until 1914.

During the First World War he served as a captain in the Italian army and took part in the 1918 battles for Monte Grappa . In 1929 he moved to the United States and taught at Columbia University in New York City , where he was director of the Italian Academy ( Casa Italiana ) from 1930–1940 and in 1940 also became an American citizen. After spending 25 years abroad, he returned to Italy, to the Amalfi Coast .

Prezzolini wrote over 50 books and edited more than 70 anthologies.

In later years he worked for the Bologna newspaper Il Resto del Carlino and moved in 1968 to Lugano in the Swiss Ticino . There he died in 1982 at the age of one hundred.

Appreciation

Prezzolini was deeply involved in the cultural and political debates in Italy in the early 20th century, and its "sparkling prose" is praised. While he was at times accused of sympathy for fascism (which he denied), "non-conformism" is called his most salient characteristic. At times he approached the currents of pragmatism, Catholic modernism and above all that of Croce's idealism and later ended up with a "sobering conservatism".

His work in the USA contributed to a greater appreciation of Italian literature, philosophy and culture and was particularly important for Americans of Italian descent. Because of his support for Benito Mussolini and his membership in the fascist party, Prezzolini was controversial.

In 1971 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. In 1982 he received (retrospectively for 1973) the "Penna d'Oro"
