Oscar Lüthy (born June 26, 1882 in Bern , † October 1, 1945 in Zurich ) was a Swiss painter . He belonged to the artist group "Der Moderne Bund".

life and work

Oscar Wilhelm Lüthy (also Oskar Wilhelm Lüthy) studied architecture at the Bern School of Applied Arts and lived in the canton of Valais from 1903 to 1907 , where, after his first attempts at painting, he turned to outdoor painting. He then took private painting courses with Hans Lietzmann in Munich , where he came into contact with religious painting. In 1911, together with Jean Arp and Walter Helbig , he founded the artist group “Der moderne Bund” in Weggis , with which he participated in three exhibitions until 1913, including the programmatic manifestation in 1912 at the Kunsthaus Zürich. After studying in Italy and Paris, he settled in Zurich.

From 1918 to 1920 he took part in exhibitions of the artists' association “Das Neue Leben” founded in Basel. In 1920 he signed the Dadaist Manifesto . Through his acquaintance with the painter Otto Meyer-Amden , he increasingly turned to anthroposophy and Christian mysticism. In 1925 the Dresden City Museum bought his painting “Madonna” (technology and dimensions unknown). The work was confiscated by the National Socialists in Dresden and shown in the courtyard of Dresden's New Town Hall in 1933 at the Degenerate Art exhibition, which was then shown in eight other German cities. In 1937 the painting by Lüthy hung in Munich on the large exhibition of the same name on the south wall in room 1, together with pictures by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Emil Nolde . His whereabouts are unknown. Lüthy received numerous commissions from church institutions in Switzerland; his last major work was the altarpiece for the Christ Church in Oerlikon (1941–1942).
