Oscar Quitak

Oscar Quitak (born March 10, 1926 in London ) is a British actor .

Quitak has starred in numerous British movies since the 1950s; he also had regular roles in British television series. In 1952 he played the role of Gerard , a staunch Belgian aristocrat who joined the resistance movement in his home country, in the British war drama When the Heart Speaks at the side of John Bailey ; his other partners were Maria Schell and Marius Goring . In the following years , Quitak was often only given secondary roles as a character actor, such as the diamond dealer in the drama Operation Amsterdam (1959) or, in later years, the military doctor in code name: Emerald (1985). Again and again, however, he also received memorable film roles. In 1958 he took on the role of the crippled, hunchbacked prison guard Karl , the assistant of Dr. Stone , in which the British film production company Hammer out brought horror film The Revenge of Frankenstein . In 1982 he played the experienced communications specialist and alleged defector Velatti in the thriller Operation Tanger , who disappeared with secret tape recordings that he apparently wants to sell to the Soviets . In 1983 he played the Soviet People's Commissar Lev Sakharovich Mechlis in the political grotesque The Red Monarch, directed by Jack Gold . In 1985 he had a small role in Terry Gilliam's film satire Brazil .

Quitak's television works often took place during the Nazi era . In the television series Colditz (1972) he played the commander of a German prisoner-of-war camp, in The Death of Adolph Hitler (1973) he played the Nazi demagogue Joseph Goebbels and in the mini-series Kessler (1981) the concentration camp doctor Josef Mengele . In 1978 he took on the role of Mr. Tesch in the US miniseries Holocaust - The Story of the White Family . In 1987 he was in the British comedy series French and Saunders in the role of Dr. To see Fennell .

Quitak also worked as a stage actor. In July 1963 he played the role of Nathaniel Winkle in the world premieres of the musical Pickwick in Manchester and London (libretto: Wolf Mankowitz ; lyrics: Leslie Bricusse ; music: Cyril Ornadel ). In 1965 he also played the role on Broadway in New York City , and later at the Hanna Theater in Cleveland . He also played, together with the British actress Andree Melly , in the world premieres of the two one-act plays If Love Decay ... (1962) and The Last Word? (1967) by Alan Ayckbourn . In 1969 Quitak and Melly played at the Hampstead Theater Club in the two-person play A Man's Best Friend by James Saunders . In 1973, again with Andree Melly as a partner, the world premiere of the Saunders play Poor Old Simon at the Capitol Theater in Horsham , Sussex . In 1986 he played the role of Herr Schul (t) z in the musical Cabaret in London . A CD recording of this production was also released, on which Quitak can be heard. In 1990 he starred at the Royal National Theater in the comedy The School for Scandal by Richard Brinsley Sheridan and in Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen .

In May 1961 appeared Quitak together with Mary Wimbush in a production of Saturday Night Theater , one of BBC Radio 4 broadcast series of plays on the radio, with: in The Storm of HLV Fletcher .

Quitak is married to Andree Melly, whom he met in 1952 while filming the film When the Heart speaks - she played the role of Paulette . Quitak and Melly lived in Spain in the 1990s . In 1999 they both attended a reunion at Hammer Studios in the UK .
