Osiander

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Osiander is an old German family name .

Origin and meaning

The family name Osiander comes from southern Germany and is mainly found in Franconia and Württemberg . The name has been documented in writing since 1440.

The widespread opinion that the name is a "humanist name" and represents a Graecization of "Hosemann" is erroneous.

Above all , the Osiander family produced a large number of theologians , for example the Osiander family in the Württemberg Church provided over 30 deans in 1720 . Most famous is the German reformer and ancestor of the Osiander family, Andreas Osiander . In the 17th and 18th centuries there were also chancellors of the University of Tübingen , as well as important booksellers in the 18th and 19th centuries .
