The Oskar Schunck GmbH & Co. KG is an international insurance broker in Germany with headquarters in Munich . The company specializes in the logistics and industrial sectors and has been family-owned since it was founded in 1919.

The company operates across Europe as the Schunck Group. In addition to the corporate headquarters, there are eleven branches in Germany. The group also has subsidiaries in France , Austria , Spain and Hungary . Schunck employs around 300 people worldwide.

Company co-founder Karl Oskar Schunck is considered to be the initiator of the General German Forwarding Conditions , on the basis of which the industry still works today. The shipping, logistics and storage insurance certificate also goes back to the Schunck Group and is a registered trademark of the company. The Schunck Group is also the initiator of the logistics terms and conditions.

The Schunck Group is a member of the Association of German Insurance Brokers .

Company history

The beginnings

On June 19, 1919, the insurance salesman Oskar Schunck and his son Karl O. Schunck founded the Oskar Schunck Insurance and Average Commissioner in Berlin. In 1923 the first branches were opened in Königsberg, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart. Only one year later, in 1924, the Deutsche Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG and Deutsche Transport-Assekuranz AG started their service in Berlin. Oskar Schunck and Karl O. Schunck filled the board positions.

Company founder Oskar Schunck died in 1936. The stock corporation became a limited partnership .

Pre-war years and the Second World War

After the death of his father, Karl O. Schunck continued to run the company as a personally liable partner from 1937 and expanded throughout Europe. Branches were opened in Vienna , London , Paris and Bucharest. In addition, subsidiaries and associated companies in the Netherlands, Spain, Hungary and Czechoslovakia started their service.

Then the Second World War paralyzed business activities. After the end of the war in 1945, the organization began to rebuild in West Berlin. A year later, the Schunckhaus in Munich was reopened.

Further development from 1947 to 1969

In 1949 the Schunckhaus in Munich was declared the company's main branch. In the same year a branch opened in Hamburg . In the following years, further branches were added in Germany and Europe , including in Bielefeld (1950), Frankfurt am Main (1951), Düsseldorf (1952), Stuttgart (1954), Hanover (1964), Bremen (1965) and Trieste (1967 ).

Karl O. Schunck died on August 10, 1969. He was succeeded by Horst OA Schunck as a third generation personally liable partner.

Development from 1970 to 1999

New branches opened in Freiburg im Breisgau (1972), Kassel (1977) and Leipzig (1992). In 1989 further subsidiaries were founded abroad - in France, Austria and Spain. In 1994 a branch was opened in Prague, and in 1998 a branch opened in Poland.

In 1994 Albert KO Schunck joined the company and took on responsibility for the IT area.

In August 1997, Schunck published the first draft of the forwarding, logistics and storage insurance certificate (SLVS) on the Internet. In 1999 the Schunck headquarters in Munich was reorganized. Horst OA Schunck transferred some of his areas of responsibility to members of the management.

Developments and restructuring from 2000

On November 28, 2000, the Transport, Spedition & Logistik Deutschland eV pension fund was founded with Oskar Schunck AG & Co. KG as the insurance broker. It is a joint establishment of the German Forwarding and Logistics Association and the members of the Federal Association of Furniture Forwarding and Logistics (AMÖ) eV, the Federal Association of Economics, Transport and Logistics (BWVL) eV and the Association of Ship Brokers.

In 2001 claimSecur GmbH started its business as a company of the Schunck Group. She deals with damage management in the transport sector, trade and industry.

In November 2003, Oskar Schunck KG helped found another pension fund, the Health Care Work for Forwarding Agents (GSL). It is aimed at employees in the transport industry and offers supplementary products to statutory health insurance.

The restructuring process of Oskar Schunck KG into an AG & Co. KG began in summer 2004. Horst OA Schunck handed over the chairmanship of the management. In July 2005 the restructuring was completed. The shareholders' meeting of Oskar Schunck KG resolved to transform the company into Oskar Schunck Aktiengesellschaft & Co. KG with effect from January 1, 2006. On January 18, 2006, the company's first general meeting took place. Horst OA Schunck was elected chairman of the supervisory board and Albert KO Schunck was appointed his deputy.

In March 2006 the logistics terms and conditions, which were initiated by Oskar Schunck AG & Co. KG, were presented to the market. The German Freight Forwarding and Logistics Association, freight forwarding companies, producers and the shipping industry were involved in the drafting.

In December 2014, Oskar Schunck AG & Co. KG changed its legal form again and since then has operated as a GmbH & Co. KG with Albert KO Schunck as managing director.

Change of personnel and generation

In January 2008, the Schunck Supervisory Board decided to part with CEO Stephan Zilkens. Michael Brauch succeeded him in April 2008. On April 1, 2010, the sole management board of the company was transferred to Gerhard Müller.

On January 17, 2012, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Horst OA Schunck, turned 80. In March 2012, he handed over the chairmanship to his son Albert KO Schunck, previously Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board.

On October 10, 2014, the previous chairman of the supervisory board, Albert KO Schunck, moved to the management board after separating from Gerhard Müller and took on operational responsibility for the SCHUNCK GROUP as a shareholder and family member. The SCHUNCK GROUP has been operating in the legal form of GmbH & Co. KG since December 2014. with Albert KO Schunck as managing director.

On January 1, 2017, Peter Kollatz and Klaus Rückel were appointed as managing directors, and Thomas Wicke on July 1, 2017.

Since his father's death on September 15, 2016, Albert KO Schunck has taken over all company shares and, as managing partner, has shaped the future of the company.

Business activity

As an independent international broker, the Schunck Group mediates insurance and risk management in the areas of road liability and goods transport and offers products in the areas of operational, environmental and production liability as well as bad debt and factoring .

The business activity is divided into the areas of traffic and logistics, industry and pension management. The target group are primarily medium-sized companies.

Cooperations

Together with the German Forwarding and Logistics Association (DSLV), the Schunck Group has been offering free insurance advice to members of the association since 2010.

Publications

The Schunck Group is the publisher of the "Text Collection Transport Liability", an overview of the most important legal provisions, terms and conditions and insurance conditions for freight forwarders and freight carriers in national and international goods traffic. The 15th edition was published in spring 2012.

Sponsorship

Together with the trade journal VerkehrsRundschau, the Schunck Group is the initiator of the “Best Apprentice” knowledge competition for prospective forwarding and logistics clerks. From 2009 to 2011 the Schunck Group supported the science award of the Federal Association for Logistics. In 2019, the SCHUNCK GROUP, together with the Verkehrsrundschau and the Contargo company, initiated the knowledge competition LOGISTIK MASTERS competition for logistics students.
