Otto Gaul

Otto Gaul (born March 26, 1903 in Neudorf ; † September 3, 1975 in Lemgo ) was a German art historian .

Life

From 1912 to 1922 Gaul attended the cathedral high school in Magdeburg . After finishing school he studied at the universities of Jena , Leipzig , Munich and Cologne . After first studying chemistry, he soon switched to art history . Otto Gaul took German studies , archeology and history as minor subjects . He completed his studies in 1931 with a dissertation on Romanesque architecture and ornamentation in Saxony .

In 1935, the native of the Harz moved to Lippe to inventory the architectural and art monuments of the region. Used for military service during the Second World War , Gaul fell into Italian captivity. He was only able to return to Lemgo in 1945 to continue his art historical inventory work. 1948-68 Otto Gaul was chairman of the natural science and historical association for the state of Lippe and advisory board for art history. 1949-57 he was also entrusted with the registration of the architectural and art monuments in Herford . In 1960 the doctor of art historian took part in excavations in Herford and in Stapelage . In 1968 he was finally able to present the first publication on the Lippe monuments and art monuments with the inventory volume on the "City of Detmold". The volume about the city of Lemgo - continued by Ulf-Dietrich Korn - did not appear until several years after his death. A publication on the monuments of the rest of the district area is still pending.
